Back Tattoos - Tattoos in Your Mirror

Back tattoos are amazingly popular today, and have been for years. Why? Think about it. What's the perfect canvas for your gorgeous, high-detail tattoo that you, a friend or a professional artist has spent hours developing? Your stern, of course! There are a number of reasons to recommend back tattoos. There are things to think about before you get one, too.

• Back tattoos make use of contour. The dorsal skin is a flattish surface, and what this means for your flash is that it'll show your carefully chosen design in a more representative way than a tattoo on say, your leg or arm.

• Back tattoos allow for size. Your torso's reverse side is the biggest surface on the body, and it is possible to get detail and scope here that just wouldn't be possible on say, a leg, arm or ankle.

• Back tattoos can require coverage. Let's face it, no matter how exquisitely your tattoo dances against the toned planes of your body, for most of us, there are situations where it is necessary to cover up, if even at a corporate awards function. This is no problem with back tattoos, especially for guys.

• Fourth, the reverse side of your torso has only about 100 million nerves in it. Ouch, that might sound like a lot, but there are something like a billion nerves in your whole entire body. The reason this is important is that there's potentially a lot less discomfort getting a really big back tattoo than getting really small ink on your wrist.

So now you can see what a good location this is for your beautiful new ink. The question is, are you going to cover every inch of your stern, or are you going to save some space for later?

Well, you may or may not have thought about this, but a back tattoo can extend from the base of your skull to the end of your buttocks, or it can be on just one section. Think of the sections as upper, middle and lower. Then think of each of these sections having a right and left side. This gives you a total of six squares to work with. A right-left-right pattern, worked from top to bottom, gives pleasing symmetry while being a bit more unusual than the practice of tattooing in just the upper, middle or lower sections. Follow a "Z" for best results.

Okay now, remember when I mentioned coverage? Coverage is different for women than it is for men. For a guy who needs to look conservative once in a while, a nice shirt will cover literally every bit of ink. For a woman in the same situation, say, an evening at the opera or ballet with your dad, the exact reverse is true. Most dressier, more formal looks for women show more skin, not less. There's no question this is a major reason why lower back tattoos are among the most popular for women. It's pretty silly that these tattoos have become universally known as Tramp Stamps, when women are mostly just trying to make an appropriate choice of location. Anyway, for the girls, that's the only place your back tattoo can go if your needs demand total concealment at any point in your future.

Just in case you don't have your ink already chosen, what do people tattoo on the dorsal parts of their bodies?

Well, it's simplest to think of two categories: images that have to do with the actual location of the back tattoo, and images that need a lot of detail to be successful. Examples of images that have to do with the actual location include angel wings on your shoulder blades, a back tattoo of an actual spinal column, or chakra symbols on the corresponding points of the spine. Ideas of pics that need a ton of detail to look good might be a large butterfly garden, a tidal wave, the coastline of your homeland, the text to a verse from your favorite song. You get the idea.

Back tattoos can be gorgeous and totally unique, as yours will be if you follow these guidelines when you're planning it. Whether you plan to have the entire Mona Lisa painstakingly inked onto every available inch of dorsal skin, or you intend instead to use this area as a work-in-progress, filling in one sector at a time, the back tattoo is one of the most versatile choices for your new ink.
